Reflecting on America's Spiritual Crossroads: Lessons from Reagan and Trump as the 2024 Election Approaches
As we stand on the precipice of the 2024 Presidential Election, I find myself reflecting deeply on the spiritual stakes that are at play in America. Throughout my career as an investigative journalist and bestselling author, I’ve often delved into the intersections of politics, prophecy, and faith. But rarely have I felt such a profound sense of urgency as I do now. The question we face is one that echoes throughout the pages of history and the Bible: Are we on the brink of a great revival, or are we facing divine judgment?
I was particularly inspired to write this after watching the newly released Reagan movie. The film moved me deeply as it portrayed the life and legacy of one of America’s greatest leaders. It was a powerful reminder of how pivotal moments in history are shaped by those who are willing to stand firm in their convictions and lead with courage and faith. The lessons from the Reagan era offer us a lens through which to view our current moment, especially when considering the parallels with the leadership of Donald Trump.

Leadership Rooted in Faith: The Spiritual Foundations of Reagan and Trump in Times of National Crisis
These two leaders, separated by decades, both emerged during times of great turmoil and uncertainty. Ronald Reagan, often described as the "Great Communicator," led America through the closing chapter of the Cold War, facing down the specter of communism and reviving a sense of national pride and purpose. His presidency was marked by a resurgence of Christian values and a strong stance against the moral relativism that had begun to permeate society. Reagan’s faith played a crucial role in his leadership; he was a man deeply committed to prayer and often sought divine guidance in his decisions. His belief in America’s divine destiny was a cornerstone of his presidency, driving his vision for a nation that stood as a "shining city on a hill."
Similarly, Donald Trump’s rise to power in 2016 was seen by many as a response to a deep cultural and spiritual malaise. His presidency, characterized by the slogan "Make America Great Again," resonated with millions who felt that the country had drifted away from its founding principles. Trump’s administration was marked by efforts to restore those principles, with a focus on religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the defense of Israel. Trump’s faith journey has been a more recent development, but it is clear that his presidency was significantly influenced by Christian leaders and advisors. He frequently sought prayer and counsel from pastors and faith leaders, and his policies reflected a commitment to protecting religious liberties and promoting Christian values.
But as we approach the 2024 election, the question that weighs heavily on my heart is whether we are poised for a revival or a reckoning. Throughout history, God has given nations moments of decision—times when they could turn back to Him and avert disaster. The story of Nineveh in the book of Jonah is a powerful example of this. I interviewed famed evangelist Billy Graham for a seven-part series of stories in 2013, and he emphasized the importance of this biblical story in relation to America today. When Jonah warned the people of Nineveh of impending judgment, they repented, and God spared them. But when nations ignore these warnings and continue down a path of rebellion, judgment often follows.
In many ways, America is at its own "Nineveh moment." The cultural and spiritual decline we have witnessed over the past few decades has brought us to a critical juncture. The 2024 election is not just another political contest; it is a spiritual battle for the soul of our nation. The parallels between the Reagan and Trump eras remind us that leadership matters. Both men were used by God to steer America through turbulent times, and both presidencies had a profound impact on the spiritual direction of the nation. Reagan’s emphasis on prayer and his belief in the divine destiny of America helped to reignite the flame of faith in the hearts of many. Trump, though often polarizing, stood as a defender of Christian values at a time when they were under intense attack.
But leadership alone cannot bring about revival. True revival comes when the people of God humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways, as 2 Chronicles 7:14 instructs. It requires a collective awakening—a recognition that we cannot save ourselves through politics or policies alone, but only through a return to the foundational truths of Scripture.
As I look ahead to the 2024 election, I am reminded of the words of the prophet Isaiah:
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness
Isaiah 5:20
We live in a time when moral clarity is needed more than ever, when the church must rise up and be the light in the darkness. The stakes are high, not just for America, but for the world. The outcome of this election will reverberate far beyond our borders, influencing the global balance of power and the future of freedom and faith.
In the end, the choice is ours. Will we heed the warnings of history and Scripture, turning back to God in repentance and faith? Or will we continue down a path that leads to judgment? The answer lies in the hearts of the American people. As we approach this critical moment, I pray that we will choose wisely, for the future of our nation—and our world—hangs in the balance.

As I reflect on the spiritual stakes of this moment, I am reminded of my own journey and the mission that has guided my work over the years. Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, recognizing the critical moment in which we stand as a nation. As we approach the 2024 Presidential Election, we are reminded of the spiritual stakes that lie before us—whether we will see a great revival or face the consequences of turning away from You.
Lord, we thank You for the leaders You have raised up in the past, like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, who have guided our nation through times of great turmoil and uncertainty. We thank You for their courage, their convictions, and their commitment to defending the values of freedom, liberty, and faith. We ask that You continue to guide our current and future leaders, giving them the wisdom to seek Your will and the strength to stand firm in the face of opposition.
Father, we acknowledge that true revival comes not through politics or policies, but through a collective turning back to You. We ask for Your mercy and grace as we navigate this crucial time in our nation’s history. Help us, as Your people, to humble ourselves, to pray, to seek Your face, and to turn from our wicked ways. We pray that You would heal our land, that You would bring about a revival that awakens hearts and minds to the truth of Your Word.
As we stand at this crossroads, we ask for Your divine guidance. Lead us, Lord, in the path of righteousness. Help us to choose leaders who will honor You and uphold the principles upon which this nation was founded. We pray for discernment and clarity as we make decisions that will impact our future and the future of generations to come.
Father, we lift up our nation to You, asking for a great outpouring of Your Spirit. May we see a revival that sweeps across this land, bringing renewal, restoration, and a return to the values that have made America a beacon of hope and freedom to the world. We also pray for protection against any forces that seek to bring division, deception, or destruction to our country.
Lord, we trust in Your sovereignty and Your perfect plan for America. We commit this election and our nation’s future into Your hands, knowing that You are in control and that You work all things for the good of those who love You.
