Unveiling the Prophecy: Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection in Biblical Perspective
As we commemorate Easter Sunday, it's essential to delve into the profound prophecies surrounding Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, foretold centuries before these events unfolded. The Old Testament scriptures vividly portray the Messiah's sacrificial journey, offering a glimpse into God's divine plan for redemption.
Isaiah 53 poignantly describes the suffering and atonement of Christ, foreshadowing His crucifixion as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Psalm 22 eerily mirrors the agonizing moments on the cross, with Jesus crying out the prophetic words, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Yet, amidst the darkness of Good Friday, the promise of resurrection shines brightly through the prophetic lens. Psalm 16:10 prophesies the triumph over death, declaring, "For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption." Just as foretold, Jesus conquered death and rose from the grave, fulfilling the prophecies and securing salvation for all who believe in Him.
As we celebrate Easter, let us marvel at the intricate prophecies woven throughout Scripture, affirming the divine sovereignty and faithfulness of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ.

Why Jesus was Crucified:
Jesus was crucified to fulfill the prophetic plan of God for the redemption of humanity. The Bible, particularly the New Testament, provides insights into the reasons behind Jesus' crucifixion. The Scripture stated that
"God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
- John 3:16
This highlights the sacrificial nature of Jesus' death, demonstrating God's love for humanity and His desire for reconciliation. Additionally, Isaiah 53 offers a prophetic description of the suffering Messiah, foreseeing Jesus' crucifixion as a vicarious atonement for sin. Verses such as the scriptures affirm this:
"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed."
- Isaiah 53:5
Significant Events During Jesus' Crucifixion:
Darkness Covered the Land: According to Matthew 27:45, darkness fell over the land from noon until three in the afternoon, symbolizing the gravity of Jesus' sacrificial death and perhaps reflecting the spiritual darkness of sin.
The Temple Veil Torn: At the moment of Jesus' death, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, as recorded in Matthew 27:51. This symbolized the access believers now had to God's presence through the atoning work of Christ.
Earthquakes and Tombs Opened: Matthew 27:51-53 describes how there was a great earthquake, tombs were opened, and many saints who had died were raised to life, appearing to many in Jerusalem. These events affirmed the power of Jesus' death to conquer death itself and foreshadowed the resurrection to come.
Why He Was Resurrected:
Jesus was resurrected to conquer sin and death, affirming His victory over the powers of darkness and validating His identity as the Son of God. The Bible teaches that Jesus' resurrection was a pivotal moment in human history, demonstrating God's power over life and death.
The Scriptures declares,
"For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him."
- Romans 6:9
This resurrection not only vindicated Jesus' claims about Himself but also assured believers of their own resurrection to eternal life. Furthermore,
The Scripture states,
"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep,"
- 1 Corinthians 15:20
emphasizing the significance of Jesus' resurrection as the guarantee of future resurrection for all believers.
Significant Events During Jesus' Resurrection:
Empty Tomb: The most significant event was the discovery of the empty tomb by Mary Magdalene and other women, as recorded in Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12, and John 20:1-18. This confirmed Jesus' resurrection from the dead and provided the foundation for the Christian faith.
Appearance to Disciples: Jesus appeared to His disciples multiple times after His resurrection, demonstrating the reality of His victory over death. These appearances brought comfort, assurance, and commissioning to His followers, as seen in Luke 24, John 20-21, and Acts 1:3.
Great Commission: Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission, instructing them to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as recorded in Matthew 28:16-20 and Acts 1:6-8. This marked the beginning of the spread of the gospel to the ends of the earth.

The Power of Resurrection:
The power of resurrection lies in its ability to transform lives and offer hope beyond the grave. Through Jesus' resurrection, believers are granted forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and the promise of eternal life.
The following scripture expresses the desire to
"know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead."
- Philippians 3:10-11
This highlights the transformative nature of resurrection, enabling believers to share in Christ's victory over sin and experience newness of life. Additionally, Revelation 1:18 portrays Jesus as the one who holds the keys to death and Hades, signifying His authority over the realm of death and His ability to grant eternal life to those who believe in Him. Thus, the power of resurrection transcends earthly limitations and offers the hope of a glorious future in Christ.
Significant Events During Jesus' Ascension and its Purpose:
Ascension to Heaven: Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven in the presence of His disciples, as described in Acts 1:9-11. This event marked the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and His return to the right hand of the Father.
Promise of the Holy Spirit: Before His ascension, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to empower His disciples for their mission (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit would equip them to bear witness to Jesus and continue His work on earth.
Preparation of a Place: Jesus assured His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them in His Father's house and would return to take them to be with Him (John 14:2-3). His ascension marked the beginning of this promise being fulfilled.
Jesus' Prophecy About His Second Coming:
Jesus prophesied about His second coming in various passages, including Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, often referred to as the Olivet Discourse. He warned of signs preceding His return, such as wars, famines, earthquakes, false prophets, and persecution of believers. He emphasized the need for readiness and vigilance, comparing His return to that of a thief in the night (Matthew 24:42-44). Jesus also described the events that would accompany His coming, including the darkening of the sun and moon, the appearance of the Son of Man in the clouds with power and great glory, and the gathering of His elect from the four winds (Matthew 24:29-31).
This is why Pastor Paul Begley and Troy Anderson co-penned the Bible prophecy masterpiece book "Revelation 911" to obey Jesus' commission to spread the gospel to the world. Before Jesus' second coming, there will be trial and tribulation, and the Holy Spirit has guided them to write this book on how to navigate before Jesus' second coming.
